Latin
Students balance mastery of grammar with translation in both directions, Latin to English and English to Latin. Students first acquire a working knowledge of basic English grammar as a foundation for Latin, and then master new concepts such as declension, gender, case, and number for nouns and adjectives, as well as conjugation, person, and tense for verbs. Students also learn to recognize and translate prepositional phrases, adverbs, and the imperative mood. Connections are made between Latin vocabulary and English derivatives, sparking an interest in etymology in general. Studying Roman culture and history gives the language its context.
